Free Solo follows climber Alex Honnold's ropeless ascent of El Capitan in Yosemite. The 2018 film won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Directors Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin wanted a distinctive look that could unify very different material: archival photographs, Alex's personal journals, and large-scale cinematography of Yosemite and El Capitan.
Alex's journals became the connecting thread. His notes on routes, moves and training gave the film a visual language rooted in how he actually thinks about climbing. That language shaped a typography system spanning the main title, lower thirds, location IDs and archival sequences. In the archival sequences, the stories of historic ascents and fallen climbers unfold in layers. Type appears as notes, annotations and fragments that emerge as the camera moves through each layer of photography.
