PBS's Future of Work is a comprehensive documentary series exploring the sweeping changes redefining the American workplace. The visual design takes on a utilitarian aesthetic, blending mixed media - such as diagrams, collage, photography, and flat graphic elements - to reflect the complex and evolving relationship between technology and labor. This layered approach mirrors the fragmentation and reassembly of work itself, offering a visual metaphor for a rapidly shifting professional landscape.
The series opener introduces key themes - AI, the impact of COVID-19, and remote work - with a tone that’s both dehumanizing and cautiously optimistic. It reflects the tension between technological progress and human experience, capturing the uncertainty, disruption, and potential shaping the future of work.
Initial sketches explored a combination of serif and mono spaced fonts as well as a pastel palette. Ultimately the final look leaned more into Google's brand font and colors.
